ADURA ONASHILE: expensive shit

Edinburgh Fringe 2016 & 2017 UK tour

We handled PR for both the fringe and UK tour of Expensive Shit which included a two week Off West End run at Soho Theatre. The multi-award winning (Fringe First, Flying Artichoke Award) play was the first all-female, all Black play to be staged in Scotland at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016. The bold and dynamic four-hander features the music and dance of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat genre and revolves around the life and experiences of Tolu, a toilet attendant, and her relationship to the women around her.

Adura Onashile (Roadkill, HeLa) reflects on two different societies at two points in time, interrogating the power dynamics of the male gaze whether under the guise of Fela Kuti's revolutionary politics in 80’s and 90’s Nigeria or in Britain today. This story of one woman’s desire to have power and control over her life is equally inspired by stories of women disenfranchised and marginalised by the world of clubs, music and politics: a subject matter more urgent now than ever.
